Publisher Blog: The FADER Selects WordPress

Great to see thefader.com, has relaunched using WordPress. The FADER, or just FADER as we call it in NY, is a magazine that covers music & fashion with lots of hip-hop, dance, rock, and reggae coverage:

The FADER was previously on a custom Ruby on Rails CMS that was built in-house.

Donncha: WP Super Cache 0.9.6.1

WP Super Cache 0.9.6.1 is now available.

This release adds the following menu item to the admin page.

page_types

You can now choose to not cache different types of pages on your blog. Don’t want to cache your front page? That’s easy now. The indented page types are types covered by the top type. “Archives” covers “Tag” and “Category” pages for example.
See the Conditional Tags codex page for a description of the page types, especially “front page” and “home”.

I also fixed a few bugs, including the AYS problem saving posts which was a problem if you had “Don’t cache for logged in users” enabled.

I never got around to blogging about 0.9.6 but that included an uninstall script that deletes the folders and files created by wp-super-cache. Make sure you read the readme.txt before running it. For security reasons you have to edit the script before using it.

I also updated the mod_rewrite rules in cache/.htaccess (Thanks Andrew!) For some reason the web server forgets the mime type it’s supposed to serve gzipped supercache files as. It should be “text/html” in the cache dir but randomly and on the odd occasion it reverts to the gzip mime type. I examined the cache files when this happens and they look correct. Clearing the cache dir fixes the problem temporarily (and file sizes match before and after). I can’t explain it.
Remove cache/.htaccess if you see this happen (you might need to use the uninstall script) and reload the admin page to regenerate the file. The new rules force the mime type in a different way. Hopefully Apache won’t forget it this time.

Weblog Tools Collection: Generating Post Ideas – A Follow Up

Last week I posted a blog entry to generate discussions about how you work at Developing Post Ideas for Your WordPress Site. The response by everyone was tremendous – 33 comments and quite a few great ideas.

It seemed that the most popular way to keep track of ideas for blog entries is by using the built in draft functionality of WordPress.  You can do this via the Admin Post writing interface or even via offline tools such as Windows Live Writer.  A quick title and a few words, lines about what you want to write about and then save it as a draft.  That draft will happily sit there waiting for you to come back to it when your ready or when you have more info to write down towards the idea/post. Once you get the post where you want it and feel the inspiration to complete it then it is easy to just publish it to your site.

If you want those drafts to appear on your WordPress Dashboard for quick reference then from the main Dashboard page of the admin interface click on Screen Options and select the checkbox next to Recent Drafts:

recentdraftsondashboard

That in turn will place a panel on your Dashboard showing your drafts:

recentdraftsdisplayondashboard

Those titles are clickable and will take you directly to the post edit page.

That is a great way to keep track of those ideas because you never know when you might log in to your admin interface and be inspired when you see those draft ideas and jump in there to finish writing that next great posting.

A plug in that was mentioned more than once to help manage a long list of drafts is the Drafts Dropdown Plugin developed by Alex King. This plugin places a tab on your Dashboard that gives you on click access to a drop down tab with your drafts listed:

Some other ideas that were mentioned to generate and hold onto those ideas were:

  • Good old everyday notepads, notebooks, sticky pads.
  • Take a break from blogging to let your mind clear and refresh your writing palate with new ideas.
  • Review the comments on your site or on a single blog entry for follow on ideas (that is the method I am using here) -)
  • Peruse RSS feeds or other websites with similar subjects to generate fresh ideas or new twists on one of your blog subjects.
  • Someone even mentioned writing down ideas that come up when they over hear discussions on public transportation!

One other plugin that got mentioned for tracking your ideas was the To Do List plugin by David Gwyer.  This plugin places a dialog box on your main Dashboard screen that is a simple text box. Just write your ideas or to do list in there and save it.  That’s it.  I recommend you move it into a prominent place on your Dashboard so you see it each time you log and hopefully get inspired to write that post. No hotlinks in this plugin just a simple electronic version of a notepad.

The bottom line is you have to find your inspiration and plug away.  Blogging is a passion and that makes getting the ideas a lot easier in the long run.

As for the electronic assists I discussed here. I recommend a combination of draft posts to hold your ideas and the use of the Drafts Dropdown Plugin to make your drafts easy to access from within your dashboard. With the quick access to your drafts and then one click to the edit post screen it is the simplest means of working on those inspired postings!

Thanks to everyone who contributed. See ya on the next one!

Weblog Tools Collection: Do you use the WordPress Codex?

Jeff and I have been having some interesting discussions surrounding the WordPress Codex and WordPress documentation. In case you were not aware, there is some fantastic volunteering work going on in WordPress documentation. We would like to see more people involved in the use of and help with the Codex and have some ideas up our sleeves towards that end. However, I think we also need to know what we are dealing with and would like some input from our readers.

I see two different audiences of the Codex and thus the two separate polls. Comments are also appreciated. Let us know if you want to help with the Codex or if you would like to help with WordPress documentation.

bbPress: bbPress 1.0.2 and bbPress 0.9.0.6 legacy version released

Today we’ve released two versions of bbPress.

  • bbPress 1.0.2 addresses a number of issues which have come up since the 1.0.1 release, including a problem where the voices count could get out of sync.
  • bbPress 0.9.0.6 is the first “legacy” release of the bbPress 0.9 branch, which will be maintained for security until late 2010.

Both releases fix a long standing bug which was affecting the way spam was being reported via the Akismet plugin. These releases are recommended for all users of both bbPress branches.

Download either (or both!) from the download page now.

Amazon.com reviews from Jeffrey P. Bezos. Includes milk, cookies, cheese snacks, binoculars, and a Cory Doctorow novel. Unfortunately, the cookie items reviewed are no longer available so we’re not able to share in “snickerdoodles [that] were the best I’ve ever had.”
